Can My Floor Support a Piano? Weight, Upstairs Rooms, and Condos
Short answer: almost certainly yes. An upright weighs 180–300 kg, a baby grand 250–350 kg, a full grand 400–500+ kg — and a residential floor built to code is designed for far more than that spread over a piano's footprint. Nobody has ever called us about a piano falling through a floor; we've been called about a lot of dented hardwood. Here's the honest engineering, the cases that deserve a second look, and how to protect the floor you have.
Why floors handle pianos
Residential floors in Canada are designed for a live load of around 40 pounds per square foot (about 195 kg/m²) across the whole floor — and that's a conservative uniform figure with safety factors built in. An upright's 250 kg sits on a footprint of roughly 1.5 × 0.6 m — about 1 m² — so on paper it's around double the design number for that square metre, but floors don't fail square metre by square metre: joists spread point loads sideways, and the rest of the room is nowhere near loaded. A grand's weight spreads across three legs and a larger area. In practice, a piano is comparable to a loaded bookcase, a full bathtub, or a refrigerator plus the people standing around it — things every floor holds without comment.
Concrete condo slabs don't even register a piano. A 20-person party is a heavier load, and buildings are designed for that.
The cases worth a second look
Very old houses with undersized or damaged joists. A century home whose joists have been notched for plumbing, cut for ducts, or softened by an old leak is the one case where a heavy grand upstairs deserves a look — by someone who can see the joists, not a piano mover. If the floor bounces noticeably when you walk across it, ask before placing a full grand there. Uprights are rarely a concern even here.
Cantilevered floors and additions. A sunroom or an addition on a cantilever or posts isn't built to the same assumption as a floor over a basement. Worth a question.
Placement across the joists. Uprights against a wall sit near the joists' bearing points, which is ideal. A grand in the middle of a long span of an old floor is the least favourable spot. If you have a choice, keep heavy instruments nearer walls — which is where they belong for climate reasons anyway (placement guide).
Mobile and manufactured homes have lighter floor structures; check the manufacturer's load guidance.
For an ordinary post-war house or anything newer, on any floor: place it and stop worrying.
Upstairs: the real issue is the stairs, not the floor
The second-floor floor is fine. What's not fine is four friends and a rented dolly on a staircase. Stairs are where pianos, backs, and banisters get hurt, and where movers earn their fee — $50–$100 per flight, typically, for professionals with straps and a piano board. Moving costs in the GTA, honestly. If the piano is going upstairs, the floor is the least of it; book the movers.
Protecting the floor
This is where the actual damage happens:
- Hardwood and laminate: an upright's small metal casters concentrate 250 kg on four coins' worth of contact — they dent hardwood and can crack laminate. Use caster cups (rubber or wood, $20–40) under each wheel; they spread the load and stop the piano creeping. Never roll a piano on hardwood without them.
- Carpet: cups help here too — they keep the piano from sinking and rocking, which affects tuning stability and the pedals.
- Tile: cups protect the tile from cracking at the caster points and add grip.
- Grands: wide caster cups under all three legs; the legs' casters are small and the loads are high.
- Radiant-heated floors: fine structurally, but heat rising directly into a soundboard is a humidity problem. A rug and an air gap help; the condo guide covers the dry-winter side.
Caster cups are the best $30 a piano owner spends. They also make the piano easier to move a few inches for cleaning without gouging a track across the floor.

Yes, in any ordinary house — residential floors are designed for loads well beyond a piano's. The challenge is getting it up the stairs safely, which is a job for professional piano movers.
Will a piano damage hardwood floors?
The casters will, without protection — they concentrate the weight on tiny points and dent wood. Caster cups under each wheel spread the load, protect the floor, and stop the piano from creeping.
Can a condo floor hold a grand piano?
