How to Clean Piano Keys — Plastic and Ivory — Without Hurting Them
The whole method fits in a sentence: a soft cloth, barely dampened with water and a drop of mild dish soap, wiped front-to-back one key at a time, then dried immediately. That's it — that's the professional technique. Everything else worth knowing about key cleaning is what not to do, how ivory changes the rules, and which jobs belong to a technician. The method, properly spelled out
- Wring the cloth nearly dry. Damp, not wet — the enemy is water running down the sides of the keys, where it swells the wood beneath and feeds the sticky-key problem you were trying to avoid.
- Wipe front-to-back, not side to side — sideways pushes grime (and moisture) into the gaps between keys.
- One section at a time, dry as you go with a second cloth.
- Sharps too — the black keys shed dye when cheap or old, so give them their own cloth pass and don't be alarmed by a faint grey on the cloth the first time.
- Frequency: whenever they look or feel like they need it. Hand oils are mildly acidic and dust is mildly abrasive; a household with daily players benefits from a monthly wipe.
Never: spray anything directly at the keyboard (sprays run into gaps — always cloth first), household cleaners, disinfectant wipes with bleach or strong alcohol (they haze and embrittle plastics and ruin ivory), furniture polish (slippery keys are a genuinely bad time), or vinegar (acid on ivory is a chemistry demonstration you don't want). First, know what your keys are
Plastic (nearly everything built after the 1960s–70s): uniform bright white, seamless tops, slightly glossy, faintly warm to the touch. Sturdy, water-tolerant within the rules above.
Ivory (many pianos before mid-century): each key top is two or three thin pieces — look for a fine seam line across the key about two-thirds back — with a subtle grain like fingerprint whorls, a matte silk feel, and a coolness under the finger. Ivory is porous, which drives every special rule: minimal moisture, no chemicals, and no soaking ever.

The yellowing question, answered honestly
Plastic keys yellow from age, oils, and UV exposure. Gentle cleaning lifts the grime portion; the age-yellowing portion is in the plastic and doesn't wipe off. Live with it (it harms nothing), or a technician can polish key tops — genuine restoration is replacement key tops, a routine and reasonably priced job that transforms an old keyboard's face.
Ivory yellows as a natural property — and here's the pleasing twist: light slows it. Unlike plastic, ivory kept in gentle daylight stays whiter; ivory locked under a closed fallboard for decades goes deep cream. So the old advice stands: leave the fallboard open in a room with indirect light (never direct sun — that's a placement sin for other reasons). Deeply yellowed ivory can be professionally cleaned and lightly resurfaced; the DIY bleaching recipes on the internet — lemon, peroxide pastes, sunlight-plus-chemicals — damage more keyboards than they whiten.
One more ivory note: chipped or lifting ivory key tops are glued and patched by technicians, and missing ones can often be matched from salvaged stock. Don't reach for the household glue — the fix for a lifted ivory is minutes with the right adhesive and a disaster with the wrong one.
