It works; that part isn't in dispute. The honest question is who needs it — because it costs several hundred dollars installed and signs you up for a small maintenance routine, and for a large share of GTA living-room pianos, a $60 room humidifier and a hygrometer achieve the outcome that matters. Here's the deciding framework we actually use with clients.
What it is and how it works
Three components hidden in the piano (bottom of an upright, under a grand): a dehumidifier bar that gently warms away excess moisture, a humidifier tank with wicking pads that add it back, and a humidistat switching between them automatically. Result: the wood at the heart of the instrument — soundboard, pinblock, action — lives in a stable microclimate year-round. It runs silently on trivial electricity, and a small light panel tells you when the tank wants water.
The payoffs, in the order owners notice them: tunings hold dramatically better through season changes; touch stays consistent; and long-term, the instrument is spared the swell-shrink cycling that cracks boards and loosens pins. All real.
The honest costs
Money: several hundred dollars, parts and professional installation, varying by piano type and system configuration. Attention: the tank needs topping up every couple of weeks in heating season — there's a warning light, but a light only helps the household that looks at it — and the wicking pads and water treatment want annual replacement (a small consumables cost, conveniently handled at tuning time). An abandoned system quietly becomes a dry system, which is worse than no system, because you think the piano's protected.
That maintenance clause is the most under-mentioned fact in the sales literature, so we're mentioning it twice: the system transfers effort, it doesn't eliminate it — from managing a room to watering a tank.
