How Much Does Piano Tuning Cost in Canada?

Across Canada, a standard piano tuning costs roughly $120–$250, with most technicians in major cities charging $150–$220. Smaller centres and rural areas sit at the lower end; Toronto, Vancouver, and Calgary at the upper. A first visit on a piano that hasn't been tuned in years usually costs more — $200–$300 — because it needs a pitch raise before a fine tuning. Here's the national picture, what's actually included, and the honest explanation of why the cheapest quote is often the most expensive one.

Typical 2026 ranges by region

Ballparks, not guarantees — individual technicians vary:

  • Toronto and the GTA: $150–$240 (our detailed local guide). We charge $160 ($140 at our current intro rate).
  • Vancouver and the Lower Mainland: $150–$250.
  • Calgary and Edmonton: $140–$220.
  • Ottawa: $140–$220.
  • Montreal: $120–$200.
  • Winnipeg, Saskatoon, Regina, Halifax: $120–$190.
  • Smaller cities and rural areas: $100–$170, sometimes plus a travel charge for long distances.

Prices have risen roughly 20–30% over the past five years, in step with everything else.

What's included — and what isn't

A standard tuning covers the full instrument — all 88 notes, every string, set to A440 and to each other — plus, with most reputable technicians, an assessment at the start and small fixes along the way (a sticky key eased, a pedal quieted). About ninety minutes.

Not included, and priced separately:

  • Pitch raise — a two-stage correction for a piano more than about 20 cents below pitch, typically a long-untuned one. Usually $50–$80 on top of a tuning, or quoted as a single higher visit price ($200–$300). What a pitch raise is.
  • Repairs beyond minor adjustments — broken strings, worn hammers, regulation, voicing — quoted after assessment.
  • Travel charges in rural areas or beyond a technician's usual range.

Why first visits cost more

A piano untuned for years has sagged flat; pulling ~230 strings up to pitch adds roughly a tonne of tension to the frame and the soundboard flexes under it, so the first strings tuned drift as the rest come up. The technician makes a quick corrective pass first, then the real tuning — two to two and a half hours instead of ninety minutes. Once the piano is at pitch and tuned annually, every later visit is standard price.

When a quote is too cheap

Tunings advertised at $60–$90 usually mean one of three things: a very fast tuning (thirty to forty minutes, skipping the pin-setting that makes a tuning hold — it fades in weeks), a tuner early in their training, or a "starting at" price that grows on the invoice. A proper tuning takes about ninety minutes and holds six to twelve months in a stable room. Paying $140–$180 once beats paying $80 three times. How to choose a tuner, and what to ask.

Budgeting by year

  • Typical home piano: one tuning a year — $150–$220.
  • Grand piano or serious player: two a year — $300–$440.
  • New piano, first year: three to four tunings while the strings settle — $450–$800, often with the first one bundled by the dealer.
  • Neglected piano, first year: a pitch-raise visit plus a follow-up tuning months later — $350–$500 — then annual.
  • Humidity control (a $20 hygrometer and a $60–$150 humidifier) is the cheapest way to make every tuning last longer.

For most households, an acoustic piano costs $150–$250 a year to keep in tune — less than most streaming subscriptions, for the instrument the family actually gathers around.

Common questions

How much does it cost to tune a piano in Canada?
About $120–$250 for a standard tuning, with major cities at $150–$220. A first visit on a long-untuned piano runs $200–$300 because it needs a pitch raise first.

Why is piano tuning so expensive?
It isn't, relative to the work: a skilled technician spends about ninety minutes setting ~230 strings by ear so the tuning holds for a year. Cheap fast tunings cost less per visit and more per year because they fade.

How often do I need to pay for tuning?
Once a year for most home pianos; twice for grands and serious players; three or four times in a new piano's first year. In the GTA, book here.
