Tuning by Ear vs Electronic Tuner: Does It Actually Matter?
Reasonable question, surprising answer: a piano tuned to a simple electronic tuner's idea of "perfectly correct" sounds wrong. Not subtly — audibly, to non-musicians. The reasons live in the physics of real strings, and they're why piano tuning remained a listening craft in a century that automated nearly everything else. Here's what's actually going on, where good technology fits honestly, and the question worth asking any tuner you hire.
Why "mathematically correct" sounds wrong on a piano
Real strings are imperfect in a beautiful, inconvenient way. A vibrating string produces its main pitch plus a ladder of overtones — and because piano wire has stiffness, those overtones run slightly sharper than pure math predicts. The trait is called inharmonicity, every piano has its own fingerprint of it, and it changes everything: if you tune each note to its textbook frequency, the overtones of low notes clash against the fundamentals of high notes, and octaves sound strangely flat and dead.
The fix is stretch. Skilled tuning deliberately tunes the treble progressively a touch sharp and the bass a touch flat — "stretching" the scale so each note agrees with the overtones of the actual strings around it rather than with a formula. Every fine tuning is stretched, the right amount differs piano to piano (a small upright needs a different stretch than a grand — its shorter, stiffer strings have stronger inharmonicity), and judging it is the heart of the craft. A440 anchors one note; the ear negotiates the other 87 with the instrument in front of it.
And unisons are beyond any needle. Most notes have two or three strings that must match exactly — matched by listening to the slow beating between them until it stops, string against string. This is pure ear work even in the most gadget-forward shop, and clean unisons are most of the difference between a tuning that sounds professional and one that sounds nearly right. The honest hierarchy of tools
A guitar-style tuner or free phone app: fine for checking whether your piano has drifted; genuinely wrong as a tuning target, because it knows nothing of stretch, inharmonicity, or unisons. This is the gap DIY tunings fall into.
Professional tuning software (the serious tools real technicians sometimes carry): a different animal — it measures the individual piano's inharmonicity and computes a custom stretched tuning for that instrument. In skilled hands it's legitimate professional equipment, especially for pitch raises and loud environments, and a fine tuner using it still sets every unison and verifies every interval by ear. The machine proposes; the ear disposes.
The trained ear alone: the traditional craft — temperament set by counting beats between intervals, stretch judged against the instrument's own voice, everything cross-checked in real time. It carries one advantage no software fully replicates: the ear tunes toward what sounds best on this piano in this room, aesthetic judgment included.
So the real dividing line isn't ear versus machine — it's craft versus shortcut. An aural tuner and a software-assisted professional converge on excellent, nearly identical results. A quick pass against a generic tuner converges on the $60 tuning that needs redoing.
What to ask, and what we do
Skip "do you use a machine?" — it sorts tuners into the wrong piles. Better questions: "Do you tune unisons and check intervals by ear?" (any professional: yes), "How long does a tuning take?" (real answer: around 90 minutes; radically less is the red flag), and "Do you adjust the stretch to the piano?" (listen for a tuner who talks about the instrument, not the gadget).
Our own practice, plainly: we tune by ear — temperament, stretch, and every unison — because on the instruments in real GTA living rooms, the listening is the quality control. However any tuner gets there, the finish line is the same: a piano that agrees with itself, holds it, and sounds not just correct but right.

Checked, yes; tuned, no. Apps hear one pitch at a time and know nothing about stretch or unisons — the two things that make a piano tuning sound like one. App-guided tunings reliably sound off and fade fast.

Between professionals, it's a distinction without much difference — top tuners of both schools produce excellent, stable tunings, and software-assisted pros still finish by ear. The meaningful gap is between any careful professional tuning and a hasty needle-chasing one.
